Introducing The Oblique Construction Shirt from Empty Reference. We had no intention of replicating a docile, conventional check shirt. Instead, we chose the scissors as our pen, performing a calm yet poetic reconstruction of the classic. The fabric is a deep navy mini-check woven from 100% cotton—fine-grained, crisp-textured, providing the perfect textured and ordered canvas for this deconstructive play.

The core of the design is a visual experiment in “breaking” and “connecting.” The shirt front is meticulously planned into three panels, each cut along a distinct diagonal angle and then rejoined with precise craftsmanship. These slanted seam lines act like carefully drawn guide lines, shattering the inherent horizontals and verticals of the plaid, directing the gaze to travel and fold irregularly across the body, thereby creating a three-dimensionality and dynamism unattainable by traditional flat cutting.

Upon this complex structure, a sleek chest pocket is ingeniously positioned. It is not only a functional repository but also a crucial visual anchor that balances the complexity, hinting at this avant-garde piece's deep connection to a utilitarian wardrobe. This is an intellectual armor for the wearer unsatisfied with convention, who seeks breakthrough within order.

📐 The Blueprint of a Wearable Architecture:

✔ Three-Panel Diagonal Cut & Construction: The core architectural language. These are not decorative stitches but true structural cuts. Three independent panels joined at non-90-degree angles create unique tension and a polyhedral visual effect, making the static check fabric appear imbued with dynamic life.
✔ Navy Mini-Check Cotton Fabric: The serene canvas. Deep navy grants the piece a stable and understated tone, while the fine mini-check produces fascinating moiré and distortion effects after deconstruction—unified from afar, rich in detail up close. Cotton ensures comfort and breathability.
✔ Functional Structural Chest Pocket: The point of balance. Amidst the dynamic diagonal splicing, a straight, rectangular pocket is carefully placed. It offers utility, and its neat form creates an interesting visual contrast with the surrounding dynamic lines, serving to stabilize the whole composition.
✔ Retained Classic Shirt Elements: The familiar frame. The collar, placket, and cuffs are presented in a traditional manner, ensuring its recognizability and wearability as “a shirt.” The deconstructive ingenuity is confined to the front body, resulting in a restrained yet powerful expression.
✔ Empty Reference on “Fluid Structure”: We believe clothing is a mobile dwelling for the body. The classic navy check is the “established order”—a socialized, safe visual language. The diagonal cuts and splices are the “personal will”—an active interpretation, breaking, and reshaping of that order. ✂️ Design Details: Dynamism in Stillness

Splicing as a Dynamic Engine: Each diagonal seam is calculated for its angle. They are not parallel to each other, as if suggesting different directions of movement or planes of force, giving the static shirt a visual illusion of rotation or slippage, highly reminiscent of modern art.

The Plaid as a Medium for Transformation: When neatly aligned plaid is cut diagonally and re-spliced, natural misalignment and continuation occur at the seams. This “mismatched match” is one of the design's most exquisite aspects, proving the pattern itself can be given new life through cutting technique.

Silhouette as a Three-Dimensional Sculpture: Due to the front panel's diagonal structure, the shirt naturally forms subtle three-dimensional folds and spatial depth when worn, rather than lying flat against the body.
